As part of the ‘OPOling CITYscape’ project, German studies students at the University of Opole are analysing the linguistic landscape of the city of Opole. The focus of the linguistic landscape research is initially on examining the spatial organisation of the voivodeship capital in German. However, the aim is to include other languages in the project in order to build up a broad and multilingual research corpus. In addition, the didactic focus of the project lies on the one hand in the scientific-methodological work and on the other hand in the examination of the students with their regional (linguistic) environment. The city of Opole offers a promising research area for the project due to its regional location (Upper Silesia) – which has historically been characterised by different cultural influences and is also currently characterised by the linguistic and cultural diversity of its inhabitants.

The linguistic landscape of the city of Opole (Opole, Poland)
Im Rahmen des Projekts ‘OPOling CITYscape’ analysieren Germanistikstudierende der Universität Oppeln die Sprachlandschaft der Stadt Oppeln. Der Schwerpunkt der Linguistic Landscape-Forschung liegt zunächst auf der Untersuchung der räumlichen Organisation der Woiwodschaftshauptstadt in deutscher Sprache. Ziel ist es jedoch, weitere Sprachen in das Projekt einzubeziehen, um ein breites und multilinguales Forschungskorpus aufzubauen. Darüber hinaus liegt der didaktische Schwerpunkt des Projektes zum einen in der wissenschaftlich-methodischen Arbeit und zum anderen in der Auseinandersetzung der Studierenden mit ihrem regionalen (sprachlichen) Umfeld. Die Stadt Oppeln bietet aufgrund ihrer regionalen Lage (Oberschlesien) – die historisch durch unterschiedliche kulturelle Einflüsse geprägt wurde und sich auch gegenwärtig durch eine sprachlich-kulturelle Vielfalt ihrer Bewohner auszeichnet – einen vielversprechenden Untersuchungsraum für das Projekt.
